Aspects Which Define Modern Furniture

By Minnie Lowery

Most people place a lot of importance on the decor of their home. Obviously a major part of this are the furnishings that one chooses. There are various styles to choose from, including traditional, classical, contemporary and modern furniture. The choice depends mainly on one's preferences. Let us delineate aspects which make these types of furnishings unique and distinctive in their simplicity.

Many claim that modern furnishings are plain and simple. In fact minimalism is a key part of such items. Designers tend to focus on practicality and the efficient use of space. As a result one will not find carvings or elaborate patterns in such items.

Straight lines feature in most of the designs, and emphasis is placed on practicality as well as the efficient use of limited spaces. Polished surfaces and metal or chrome colored accessories and additions are also common.

Another aspect worth noting is that these types of furnishings are often quite light when compared to other types where solid wood is generally used. In fact molded plywood is the most common material used in the production of modern furniture.

Having said that, it is worth noting that this has in effect on the prices. In fact relatively speaking such furnishings are generally more affordable than classical items. However, it is also important to bear in mind that plywood is prone to chipping and scratches. Hence it is not as durable, and one may need to change them after a relatively shorter period of time.

Contemporary styles developed mainly due to the increase in mass production. Manufacturers which started to use mechanized processes and dedicated machines contributed to the emergence of such a style. Furthermore, since most new apartments are much smaller nowadays, the furnishings need to be adapted to the limited space. The design of such items helps them to fit in limited spaces, and to allow enough room for moving around.
